Follow the Map
An Inkford FriYAY Writing Prompt
Inkford has a way of making hard things feel doable. Not because the work is small. Because the steps are clear.
This week we met:
Jax, who rushed to publish, skipped key steps, and paid for it in regret.
Mara, who researched herself into a frozen state and lost a year to “almost.”
Quinn, who chose a route and followed a trail map: goal → route → timeline → team.
And Inkford’s rule is the one carved right into the Trailhead Board at Cover Story Outfitters: Publishing is a route, not a leap. Pick your path, build your team, follow the map.
You don’t need to know everything. You need to know what’s next. You don’t need to publish perfectly. You need to publish professionally—in a way that respects readers and protects your work.
And if you’re tempted to sprint (hi, Jax) or freeze (hi, Mara), Inkford suggests a third option: Step. One marker at a time. (Anyone else singing in their heads, “Put one foot in front of the other” from “Santa Claus is Coming to Town?”)
FriYAY Writing Prompt (15–20 minutes, no editing)
Where am I trying to leap instead of hike?
Then answer:
What’s my goal for this book? (One sentence.)
Which route fits that goal best right now? Indie Ridge/Small Press Pass/Hybrid Summit
What is my next trail marker? (Choose one: edit sequence/cover /interior/metadata/proof/ aunch runway)
Finish with: “The team I need for this season is…”
If you feel like sharing, drop your goal + route in the comments. Inkford loves a trail buddy.
